Over the weekend we went to a theme park. Our sons got a coupon through school and, as exams are upcoming for the bigger children, a discount was offered to those that would still visit. So off we went to Bobbejaanland. I'd never been there before, so I didn't know what to expect.
Upon entry, we walked around, checking the app to figure out what to do. Unfortunately, paper maps are no longer a default, and while an app can offer details on waiting times, this one wasn't that great for navigating around. But anyway, I digress. We went from one attraction to another, keeping clear of roller coasters for the time being. I'm not really a hero when it comes to those, nor are my children.
After lunch and having done most of the other attractions, my wife thought it was time for a roller coaster, especially as there were quite many. Also to push our kids to at least try, as they often say no first but later admit they had fun. Nelson wanted to have a go and chose me as his partner. The roller coaster wasn't that extreme, so I accepted. The ride itself was fine, but I can't say I loved the feeling, especially on those speedy corners.
As Nelson said he enjoyed it, my wife and Milhouse decided to give it a try as well. I sat next to Milhouse and immediately noticed he did not enjoy himself. He was grimacing heavily with an "ungh" grunt from time to time when taking a bend. I tried reassuring him, talking about the course and what was to come, the easy bits as well as the harder ones.
Right before the end, a hard bend came up. I reassured my son it was the last one, and as I was saying it, I blacked out. A few seconds later I came to, wondering where I was, before getting out on jelly legs. I managed to reach the exit and told my wife I had to lie down. After resting, a drink and some salty food, I was back on my feet, but I no longer had any interest in doing other attractions. The boys and my wife did a few more, while I sat down and watched. We called it a day and went home.
I don't know what happened exactly. It could have been linked to my fitness and a much lower resting HR and blood pressure, which is good for sports, but apparently not for this. Or perhaps low food intake and dehydration. In any case, I'll be even less of a hero when it comes to these types of attractions.
And while we still want our children to explore and try new things, we won't be pushing them into it. Some things just aren't for everyone, including me π.
